Synthetic Chemicals Found in Breast Milk
If you need another reason to start using eco friendly cleaning products (and human friendly) or to switch to organic beauty products, then consider this recent research which show that high levels of synthetic fragrances are being found in breast milk (via New Scientist):
Record levels of synthetic fragrances from everyday cleaning, deodorising and beauty products have been found in the breast milk of American women.
Little is known about the health risks of these fragrances, more accurately known as polycyclic musks. Older fragrances, called nitro musks, caused cancer in animals, and there are indications that high doses of polycyclic musks may cause developmental and reproductive problems. So far, though, no one has looked at the possibility of more subtle effects, says Kannan.
I’ve made the switch to friendlier cleaning products but have yet to completely switch over to organic beauty products. I’m always reluctant to try new skin care products but in the coming weeks I’m going to check out some new products and brands. I’ll review them here so you can all get an idea of the best brands. I’m also going to stop using perfume as it can’t be doing me any good and it’s not really necessary anyway. It’s definitely something I can live without.

Our skin is the largest eliminatory organ in the body. It is a two way membrane. Toxins are eliminated through the skin via perspiration and absorbed through the skin, into the body’s systemic circulation, through hair follicles and sebaceous glands (not sweat glands). One square inch of skin contains 65 hairs, 100 sebaceous glands, and 650 sweat glands.
Cosmetic manufacturers are not supposed to claim that their products penetrate our skin. If they did (the products would then be labeled ‘drug’ and henceforth be governed by much stricter regulations. This is both good and bad. Good because it means your skin can be nourished from the outside with some wonderful ingredients. Bad because it means some cosmetic manufacturer can put into their products that would never be allowed to be taken orally, but are still absorbed into our system, through our skin.
If you have ‘organic’ written on your shampoo or conditioner or any of your skin care product this can be legally done without the product being truly ‘organic’ as the chemistry definition of ‘organic’ means a compound that contains a carbon atom. Carbon is found in anything that has ever lived. For example, that means that a petrochemical preservative called Methyl Paraben is “organic” because it was formed by leaves that rotted over thousands of years to become crude oil, which was then added to your moisturizer to preserve.
I have attached a list of common toxic ingredients used in skin and hair care products.

Unfortunately there is no authority that governs the use of the word ‘organic’ in cosmetics or skin and hair care products. However the term ‘certified organic’ IS governed by a number of internationally recognized bodies. In Australia, Australian Certified Organic (ACO) is the largest. Searching for products with the logo of a certified organic body is the only way you can guarantee the organic authenticity and integrity of EVERY ingredient in the product
What I want you to do is go and get your shampoo, conditioner, skin care and cosmetic products and read the labels. Do you have to be a chemist to know what you are putting on and ultimately IN your body? If you don’t know what every ingredient is, even ¾ of the ingredients then why use it?
Go onto the web attachment below and have a look at the products in the Miessence range, even if you try them only once what have you got to lose other than synthetic chemicals in your system that are probably making your body sick? You have to start somewhere.
