I was talking to a lady today who raves about bamboo clothing. She said it was great to wear and washes well (unlike hemp - that we find wears out really quickly) I am interested in whether or not they use any chemicals in the farming process (like cotton) & is it from renewable farms???

Do people know by now that bamboo is actually “rayon”? Bamboo, the plant, may be a smart environmental alternative (grows fast, dense, small enviro foot print…), but the fabric is another story!
The process used to convert bamboo into fabric, is the one used to make rayon (which comes from cellulose of plants such as hemlock, pine). Same process! And VERY chemical too! Nothing eco-friendly about the process!

I cannot label my garments as “bamboo”: in the USA & Canada, it must read:” rayon from bamboo”.

There is a mechanical process to break down the bamboo pulp; that give you a fabric that is more like linen. We do not see much of that due to the high cost.
An eco-friendly approach in clothing: buy quality garments that will last you a long time, and that will still look fashionable.
    VoilĂ !

I definitely have my doubts about bamboo as an eco friendly fabric but as you say, buying quality, long lasting products is a great eco friendly approach.
