Compact Fluorescents Make You Unattractive?
Fluorescent lighting has had a bad name in the past as the colour it gives off can leave you looking less than attractive. It is one of the reasons that people are reluctant to put them in their work places (particularly in shops) and homes. People still believe that fluorescent lights can make you look sick but modern compact fluorescent light bulbs have improved significantly in recent years. I use compact fluorescents in my home and the colour is fine. I won’t hesitate to use them in the future and in every room of my house.
Other people are not so accepting of the light these bulbs give off. A recent article in the NY Times had this to say:
WHEN I found out last week that Wal-Mart, America’s biggest company, was putting a push on compact fluorescent light bulbs, hoping to make them a new lighting standard at home because they use 75 percent less energy, last 10 times longer and would save me $30 over the life of each bulb, I thought to myself, what’s not to like?
Well, fluorescent light’s not to like, many people might say.
What’s the problem? For one, it’s not incandescent.
But fluorescent light’s greatest setback in conquering the home might be its own great success with having conquered the workplace and other commercial spheres. People’s associations with it are not only not good, they’re actively bad. Anyone who has ever sat under flat fluorescent light in an office cubicle, a waiting room, a government bureau, a cheap restaurant or a dirty motel understands this pretty well. You equate fluorescent light with your boss, license renewal, indigestion and divorce. Not beautiful sunsets, blush wine, fireside s’mores, and candlelit dinner dates. An “incandescent” evening.
“Because of their small tube diameter, there’s a limit to the quality of color rendering that can be packed into the tube, so they’re not too flattering to the skin,” he said of how they light people — light’s most critical arena.
The difference in colour between compact fluorescent bulbs and incandescent bulbs is minimal and the colours are improving all the time. The benefits of compact fluorescent light bulbs outweigh any negatives, as far as I’m concerned. Compact fluorescents use up to 75% less energy than standard bulbs and can last up to 6 times longer. The savings in electricity as well as the cost savings make them a worthwhile investment.
