Organic Cocktails
Organic cocktails seem to be the drink du jour for many celebrities such as Stella McCartney and Leo DiCaprio.
Make the perfect organic cocktail using either organic vodka or organic gin, mixed with organic juice or other mixer, then served in a recycled glass champagne glass. Don’t forget some snacks such as organic olives and organic cheese.
So why would you want to drink an organic cocktail? Here are a few reasons listed by Ideal Bite:
- The taste. Critics are singing the praises of these new organic liquors.
- Forgo harmful chemicals and pesticides. Production of grain used in a typical alcohol may include chemicals like chlorothalonil, lindane, fonofos, and dimethoate - all potential carcinogens and/or hormone disruptors.
- Organic farming uses less water and emits about 60% less carbon into the atmosphere.
- Everybody’s been to a tropical- or Rat Pack-themed cocktail party. Host an organic cocktail party - it’s original, and guests will thank you for letting them forgo the costume and the pesticides
View has listed the Top 10 vodka cocktail recipes which you might want to try (using organic ingredients, of course). My favourites include:
- Tatanka - This is the favoured mixed vodka drink in Poland. Mix apple juice and Zubrowka (bison grass vodka) in a 2:1 ratio, and serve in a tumbler with ice.
- Metropolitan - Ben Reed’s delicious modified Cosmo. In a shaker 2/3 filled with ice add a large (50ml) shot of Absolut Kurant vodka and a small (25ml) shot of each of the following - Cointreau, fresh limejuice and cranberry juice. Shake and strain into a chilled martini glass. Flame some orange zest over the drink, wipe the rim with the zest, and then add it to the drink.
- Moscow Mule - This fine cocktail became popular again a few years back when Smirnoff launched a ready-mixed version. When made properly it is a superb drink. Fill a highball with ice, and add a large (50 ml) shot of vodka. Squeeze a lime (cut into wedges) into the glass, and drop the husks in. Top up with ginger beer (or ginger ale if that’s all you can get), stir and serve with a straw.
I have seen organic vodka around so I might try it now that we’re into party season. It is relatively expensive though. Maybe someone will get me a bottle for Christmas!
