Aussie Rules Eco Friendly?
The AFL has recently announced its plans to become carbon neutral.
The Australian Football League is pleased to announce that over the next three years Origin Energy’s ‘AFL Green’ program will neutralise an estimated 120,000 tonnes of greenhouse emissions generated from AFL House, the NAB Cup, Toyota Premiership Season and Finals Series matches.
By 2009 the AFL will be ‘carbon neutral’, with its greenhouse emissions offset by activities such investment in renewable energy and energy efficiency. It will be the equivalent of taking 25,000 cars off the road or planting 500,000 trees.
They say they’ll achieve this through investment in wind and solar energy efficiency projects and tree planting. Considering the amount of energy they use just to light their night games, let alone everything else that goes into running such a major sporting competition, they’ve got a lot of work to do. I’m pretty impressed that they would even consider something like this and it would be great to see other organisations follow their lead.
This is also being reported by Treehugger after discussing how footballers should make an effort to go greener. There are a number of things which the Europeans are already doing to reduce their environmental impact.
Football teams fly all over the world for games and fans drive to the matches, leaving tons of litter behind. He quotes several examples of football clubs that have embraced greener ways: Manchester City has installed wind turbines to power the stadium. They also source local produce for their kitchens and have tried to improve the recycling of drinks bottles at training grounds. In Germany, tickets for the match double up as train, tram or bus tickets to encourage use of public transit. Garbage cans are divided into sections (cans, plastic, paper)—not a difficult thing to introduce.
I’m sure there are lots of other things which can be done to reduce energy use and waste.
