5 Reasons to Propagate Your Own Plants

I’ve tried propagating my own plants a few times but I’ve never been successful. I don’t know why, I just don’t have the right touch, I guess. The last time I tried it the cuttings were just starting to take when my cat decided she wanted to make the seed trays I was using as a bed. Don’t ask me how she found that comfortable but she loved sleeping there. Needless to say, the plants didn’t last long after that.

I’m determined to successfully propagate my own plants so I’m going to give it another go. Here’s why:

5 Reasons to Propagate Your Own Plants

  1. Save Money
You can produce your own plants and seeds for free. All it takes is a little time and effort.
  2. Avoid Pesticides
Commercially grown plants are often sprayed with chemicals including pesticides and herbicides. These can also be found within potting mixture. Seeds are also treated with chemicals. This is the last thing you’d want in your organic garden, especially when growing fruit and vegetables.
  3. Get the Plants You Want
You can buy organic plants from your local garden centre but he range is limited. Propagating your own plants means you can get any variety of plant you want, including rare and unusual varieties.
  4. It’s Better for the Environment
Producing your own plants means less transportation costs and less CO2 emissions.
  5. It’s Fun
Gardening is relaxing and enjoyable (for me at anyway) and successful propagation can be very rewarding. Taking cuttings, dividing plants, saving seeds, and watching them grow is fun.
