I wish there were more organic chocolate options in Australia. I was recently travelling around Europe and discovered so many more brands. Even some of the supermarket home brands were delicious, or maybe that’s just me.

In Australia you can find Kaoka which isn’t bad but I’ve had better. Green and Black’s seems to be popular but I’ve never really liked it. Topping many people’s list is Cocolo chocolate which you can buy online from Eco Essentials. I haven’t had that for ages. Some people are lucky enough to get free samples of it.

As far as finding chocolate in Melbourne goes, visitors to the Prahran Market seem to have a good choice of tasty treats both organic and not:

I would visit Monsieur Truffe, a real Frenchman with an accent (but not a comic Gabrielle Gaté one) but no website. His cart is almost smack in the middle of the main market hall and he has become one of the most popular artisans in Melbourne (according to bloggers at least), as I’ve said before.

He makes some of the best truffles I have ever tasted in Australia. They are not too sweet. Plain dark, lime, rosemary or mountain pepper. His caramelized chocolate coated roasted almonds are second only to ice (or crack cocaine) in their addictive qualities.

I think I’ll be making a trip there next time I’m in Melbourne.

Vegan Perfection has a good range of chocolates such as Booja Booja. They are both vegan and organic and have won numerous awards in Europe. They are based in Altona but you can place an order over the phone or by email.

I’m sure there are plenty of other places where you can buy organic chocolate in Melbourne. Melbourne markets are probably a good place to start looking.
