Organic Chicken Not Really Organic
There have been a couple of reports today about the possible contamination of Australian certified organic chicken. All exports of organic chicken have been stopped due to chickens being fed with conventional meat meal. The meal was incorrectly labelled as certified organic and has been used as chicken feed since 2002.
However, the Organic Standards Committee says:
Chicken certified as organic still meets international standards and has not been contaminated in any way.
I can assure consumers that there’s certainly no product out there that we know of bearing a certification mark that is anything other than certified organic and complying with those organic standards.
People are concerned that there are different standards for the international market and the domestic market.
This doesn’t seem to have been a deliberate error but it just goes to show how you have to be careful where you get your produce from.
I’m not surprised this kind of thing could happen. Let’s just hope it doesn’t become a regular occurrence.
