Clarins To Go Organic
L’Oreal recently purchased French organic cosmetics company Sanoflore which is a sure sign we’ll see L’Oreal adding organic cosmetics and skin care to their product range in the not so distant future.
Clarins is going the same way after they also purchased a French company, Kibio. Kibio produces organic skin care such as cleansers, moisturisers, shower gels, and makeup remover. All their products are 99% natural and certified organic.
Clarins won’t be too happy though with a press release which came out yesterday, severely criticising the brand for its use of chemicals and parabens in their products.
Here are a few quotes from this press release:
Perfumes and other cosmetics may make you smell good and look good, but they have the potential of making you seriously ill or worse - killing you.
Clarins does not put a warning label on this product and if you purchase it you are putting your health and the health of your children at risk.
As one of Clarins’ most popular products, Angel Perfume, for example, has the potential to cause damage to mucous membranes, irritation to eyes, nose and throat and damage to the brain, liver and kidneys and possibly lung and skin damage.
Parabens have the potential for breast cancer and potential endocrine disruptors, raising concern for impaired fertility/development and increased risks for certain cancers.
As stated at piercemattie.com, Clarins uses the same chemicals which are found in most cosmetics available in your local department store.
Parabens are widely used in the cosmetics industry as a preservative and are generally considered to be safe. One study reported that parabens are linked to breast cancer but the results of that study have been debated and nothing has been proven.
Parabens can cause skin irritation if you are allergic to it, however, most people are not. Organic cosmetics usually do not use parabens and are an option if you are concerned about any potential risks.
Stating that cosmetics have the potential to kill and lead to certain cancers is a bit extreme. While I think natural and organic is better as there are less negative impacts on the environment as well as less likelihood of irritation, I think that it’s improbable that the use of regular cosmetics will lead to death.
