The Eco Friendly Alpaca

While you won’t find much in the way of organic alpaca fleece clothing, you may be lucky enough to stumble across this eco friendly fabric. The alpaca fibre is softer than wool and is used to make blankets, jumpers, coats, and socks.

The alpaca is a small Peruvian animal related to camels and farming them does very little damage to the environment. They can live in very tough conditions such as in deserts or in the mountains. This means farmers can let them wander off and do their own thing. In other words they are very low maintenance.

Alpacas are clean. They use toilets! Well, not quite a toilet but they do have a communal dung pile in an area away from where they graze. So that makes them easy to clean up after if you want to keep them in a small area.

Another benefit of alpacas is that they don’t eat a lot. They eat just enough to get by and no more. So alpacas are low maintenance and don’t cost much to feed. That sounds good so far.

So what about the fabric? It’s soft, warm, lightweight, and comes in 22 natural colours. So you don’t need to treat the fabric with chemicals and dyes. This is a big bonus for the environment.

If you want to get your hands on this luxurious fibre then you’ve got your work cut out for you. The only place I’ve seen it is at this alpaca farm in Denmark (that’s the town in WA’s south west not the Scandinavian country). I’m sure these kinds of farms are all around Australia and are probably the best place to get your hands on some alpaca fibre.

If you’re looking for an eco-friendly fibre then alpaca wool is a fantastic choice. Not only is the fibre luxurious but you’d be supporting one of the cutest animals around.
