Solar Hot Water | Solar Chargers
A simple way to save electricity is to use solar power. Solar energy is commonly used in heating (water and buildings), cooking, solar lighting, telephones, electricity generation, and desalination of water. It is often used as a power source in remote locations, including space. The use of solar energy is becoming more widespread as costs decrease, technology improves, and concerns about the environment and fossil fuels increase.
For most people, it is not practical or cost effective to run your entire home on solar power but it is possible and easy to heat your water with a solar hot water system. This is especially the case in Australia with many regions averaging 7 or 8 hours of sunshine per day. Solar hot water systems can result in cost savings in the long term but importantly can result in significant reductions in carbon dioxide emissions, especially if you use the solar hot water system with gas. This is an excellent way to reduce your ecological footprint and help the environment.
A smaller way to reduce your electricity consumption is to use solar chargers. Solar panels and chargers are small, portable rechargers powered by the sun. They can recharge lights, mobile phones, mp3 players (such as an iPod), satellite phones, PDAs, and handheld games. Basically anything which can be charged by a cigarette lighter can be charged by a solar charger. They can also be used to recharge your car battery.
A number of solar packs or panels are available but the Solio looks particularly interesting. It is very small as it can fit in the palm of your hand. It takes 8 to 10 hours to charge which creates enough energy to recharge a mobile phone. It is available from Harvey Norman and similar retailers.
These are just a few of the solar options available but hopefully we’ll see new products coming onto the market in the near future.
