Reduce Your Environmental Impact

The Green Challenge is on with Slate and Treehugger getting together to put us all on an 8 week carbon diet.

Carbon dioxide emissions are believed to be a significant contributor to global warming and the time to do something about it is now. The main human activities which cause carbon dioxide emissions are burning fossil fuels and deforestation. The US is by far the biggest culprit but we have all had an impact.

We can’t wait for governments to get their act together. We as individuals need to and can take action. Over the coming weeks, Slate will provide us with information and tips on how we can reduce our environmental impact. Head over to Slate to take their quiz to determine your current carbon output. This will give you a reference point to look back on after the 8 week ‘diet’.

The first week is about how to reduce emissions from driving or taking taxis or public transport. Do their quiz or follow my advice for reducing your fuel consumption.

I really like the idea of everyone getting together to make little changes which can no doubt have a big impact on the environment. Unfortunately the Slate site didn’t work properly for me. I couldn’t complete the initial carbon quiz and then when I went on to the transportation quiz I was asked to log in again rather than to go on to page two. Earlier in the day their site was offline which didn’t help either. The other problem with the quiz was that they asked absurd questions such as how many miles to you travel by car or bus every year. I am supposed to know that with any kind of accuracy?

Overall their site is pretty disappointing but I’ll stop back later and see if they’ve sorted out their bugs. Hopefully in the coming weeks they’ll have lots of useful tips for us all to make the world a (slightly) better place.
