Organic Silk
You are unlikely to find organic silk but you may come across Eco Silk products or Peace Silk fabrics including these. However, as a general rule, silk is not particularly eco friendly nor is it cruelty free.
Treehugger has a detailed post on the ‘greenness’ of silk. The positive aspects of silk are that it’s a:
- renewable resource
- biodegradable fabric
- natural fabric
Unfortunately the negatives outweigh the positives. Silk is generally:
- produced using cheap labour
- not fair trade
- transported long distances
- not organic
- chemically treated
- not vegan (if that’s a concern)
- cruel as the moths gets boiled to death before harvesting
I have quite a lot of silk clothing but I will think twice before purchasing it in the future. Leave a comment if you have seen any eco silk products in Australian shops.
