Great to see a site that lists growers markets – growers deserve and need support!! The best way to find the ‘City Farm Organic Growers’ Market’{its actual name}is to find Lime st. off Royal st.East Perth {the actual address is 1 City Farm Place -only listed in 2007 street directories} or using sustainable transport-Yellow Cat Bus stop 15 or Claisebrook train station. As far as I know it is the first and only fully ‘Organic’ growers’ market in W.A. {all produce ‘certified’ organic or ‘certified’bio-dynamic} Cheers thom – Organic/Bio-Dynamic is Best !!!

Yep I have been searching for more growers’ markets too… city farm is good and I’m glad to support it, but the range is sometimes a bit limited. Surely there must be more than this? I’ve tried getting deliveries but it is pretty expensive and not always the best service…

  3. Andrea February 21st, 2007 7:06 pm

I think you can get some organic produce at the Subiaco markets but I haven’t been there and maybe in Fremantle too but there isn’t a lot of choice. The key might be to get there early, when the market opens but you’re right, it’s often limited.

I’ve started growing a lot of my own vegetables for this very reason. You can’t beat it for freshness and taste plus I get exactly what I want.

Which delivery services have you tried?

  4. dominique April 1st, 2007 4:23 pm

I have found a local organic shop called “An organic experience” in Kallaroo, Joondalup (north Perth). They do home deliveries at a charge of $5. The meat is especially good. I do find it quite expensive, but then I have nothing to compare it to!

  5. Melissa October 17th, 2007 2:06 pm

There is a farmers market held every Sunday at 6am at The Crescent in Midland. Its on the main street which they close off. The best, freshest and cheapest produce i’ve brought in a long time.

  6. Ellissa November 7th, 2007 2:08 am

I have given up on the markets as you can never be sure if the produce is sprayed or not. I have found two oops three really great stores that sell fresh organic produce (depending on the day of the week you shop). They are Hills fresh up in Mundaring, Friends of Bialia on the Mundaring Wier Rd and the fruit and veg store at the Junction Cnr of Morrison and GE Hwy in Woodbridge. The Junction also boasts the best delicatesson (excuse my spelling:-) around, with a great range of Sheep and Goats cheeses at affordable prices.

  7. Andrea November 9th, 2007 7:05 am

Do you really think market stallholders are claiming to sell organic produce when in fact it’s not? I’m sure this could happen occasionally but I think for the most part if they state it’s certified organic then that is the case.

Thanks for the tips on where to find quality organic fruit and vegetables in Perth.

  8. tracy January 5th, 2008 9:07 am

I am (to my shame) only now begining to look into buying free range organic food, inspired by jamie oliver, I know the prices are high, so knowing for certain I am helping sustain organic farming is most important to me, and do not want to be conned hence sustaining non organic cruel farming. Any assistance in finding new places to shop would be appreciated.

  9. Deb Greenwood January 14th, 2008 9:28 am

Hi all, Organic n Green (previously An Organic Experience) will delivery certified organic fruit, veges, meat, dairy and groceries just about anywhere in the metro area (including Yanchep and an agent in Mandurah). We try to keep our prices as low as possible and delivery fee as low as possible. I think there is also a market in Gingin but I need to find out more about that.

You will be interested to hear of the Mt Claremont Farmers Market, held every Saturday morning 8.30am-12.30pm, at Mt Claremont Primary school, one block from the Perth Royal Show grounds. Public transport at the gate. It is strictly a farmers market (like the Albany farmers market) and we have several organic growers and producers. You can purchase lettuce piced one hour before you buy it, a fantastic range of seasonal fruit, including tree ripened and UNWAXED apples,
orange juice from oranges picked the day before, Perth’s tastiest strawberies (in season), jams, free range eggs, olive oil, honey and bees wax products and many other products all sold by the grower.
We also have a stall showcasing products from the stallholders of the Gascoyne Growers market in Carnarvon including bananas, mangos, fruit ices and dried fruit.
    There is more of course.
If you are passionate about your food and the quality and freshness. we are a great place to be on a Saturday.

Hint – if you come after 9.30am you will avoid the queues and still get all the great produce.
Oh, and the coffeeand the crepes are great also!
Please contact me for any information. We are developing a website.

Thanks for the info Miranda, I’ll definitely be visiting.

  13. Lynda Mitchell February 21st, 2008 3:06 pm

    Hi Miranda,

Are there any suppliers at the Mt Claremont Farmers Market selling meat and fish? Have been searching for a farmers market near us for a long time and have just come back from Albany. The Albany Market produce is so tasty, I have completely forgotten what real potatoes tasted like!! I think we are a long way off Borough Market in London.

Will visit Mt Claremont this saturday.

    Lynda

  14. Sharon February 24th, 2008 8:33 pm

    Hi Miranda
I read about you in the West today – great news!!
I have been dreaming & talking about a Farmer’s Market in my local area (further North from you). Our local school was once surrounded by market gardens and now we have many new homes & young families. I am inspired by the thought of buying fresh local produce without using the car AND generating a much needed sense of community.
Do you have a spare moment for a coffee?
I’d love to hear how it all came together.

  15. Pat February 25th, 2008 10:10 am

Midland Farmers’ Market – Sundays from 6am for great priced seasonal fruit and veg. The Crescent, Midland (Midland’s main street). This is a great market – I go there often

Mondo’s Saturday Market – for local gourmet treats including Essenza coffee and New Norcia Bread –Saturdays from 8am til 12 noon. 824 Beaufort St, Inglewood.

City Farm Organic Markets – Western Australia’s first certified organic market, including fresh food and other organic household items – Saturdays from 8am til 12 noon. 182 Brown St, East Perth.

  16. Miranda February 25th, 2008 8:38 pm

Thanks for your feedback and comments. We were delighted with the article in Saturday’s West Magazine in the newspaper.

The Mt Claremont Farmers Market has two certified organic stalls and a couple of others that sell some organic products. The organic products include fruit, veges, eggs, lamb, beef, pork (including nitrate free organic bacon), bread, muffins and sponge cake made with organic flour, fruit, milk, eggs etc.(on occasion), pickled beetroot, chillies, sweet potato, dried banana, Mango jam and Chilli sauce. Some of the products (eg meat, ice cream and eggs)are only available every fortnight but the rest of the organic range is available weekly.

We have a few other stalls now registered as organic but they are still selling the last of their non organic range with this season’s crop being organic but not in the market yet. (Olive oil etc).

    Hope you enjoy the market.

  17. Maxine February 27th, 2008 5:03 pm

I too have been looking for cheap organic vegetables, meat and fish.
I buy as much as I can organic due to sever allergies and I feel that there is a real difference.
We all seriously need to support these farmers, and I am looking forward to trying the new one in Mt Claremont. on Saturday. as it is not far from me at all.

  18. Paige March 12th, 2008 3:44 pm

    Hi Miranda,

We have been coming to the markets for a while now and are loving them.
Since moving here from the east a couple of years ago we have been waiting for something like these markets to open.

I wondered if you could help me with a contact for one of the stall holders – she is there with cupcakes every second week and I have lost the card with her details. I think it is Subiaco Cupcakes.

I am unable to find any telephone contact for the markets.

    Thanks,
    Paige

  19. Fiona March 18th, 2008 9:36 am

Great to hear of these markets – what would it take to set one up in Fremantle?

  20. Rachael March 19th, 2008 4:32 pm

    Hi Fiona –

Great News! As of Sunday 11 May, a weekly Farmer’s Market will be held within the grounds of FERN the community garden space on the corner of High & Montreal Streets in Fremantle. I have recently returned home to Fremantle after living in Melbourne and I really missed having regular access to fresh seasonal produce direct from the grower, so have partnered with FERN to coordinate one! We are currently developing a website with more information, and will post the details once it is up and running! Cheers – Rachael.

  21. Simone March 22nd, 2008 6:39 am

    Hi all

I am visiting from Brisbane and just about to head off to the Mt Claremont Farmers markets, which I am looking forward to. I love farmers markets and am a regular shopper in my home town and try to visit them when I visit other parts of Australia.

In Brisbane I belong to a Community Supported Agriculture scheme called Food Connect. I pay a weekly subscription (paid in advance each season) and get an awesome box of mixed produce each week. The food is all sourced from SE Qld (so is local, seasonal and travels less food kms) and all grown using sustainable farming practices (some organic, some farmers working towards organic certification, some simply using sound farming techniques). It is a great concept and I would love to see other people in Australia enjoying being part of a similar food community. I pick my produce up each week from my city cousin (local volunteer in my suburb) and have subsequently met lots of people in my suburb who are part of the food connect community. If you want more information visit the food connect website – it’s a great concept. I have been part of the scheme for almost 2 years having tried numerous other organic and non organic home delivery services. The scheme also sells organic milk (you can also buy into a herd), raw honey, organic eggs, fair trade coffee, organic meat – all at much better prices than I can find elsewhere AND where farmers make a decent living out of the sales.

Sorry for raving – but I would love it if someone could start a Food Connect branch over here so that my friends and family could enjoy being part this great food community.

But for now I am off to the farmers markets to enjoy some lovely WA produce. Happy Easter!

  22. Andrea March 22nd, 2008 9:01 am

That sounds like a great idea. I would love to see that kind of thing being promoted around the country. Is it available (or something similar) in other states?

  23. Sheryl March 31st, 2008 9:50 am

    Hi Miranda,
I visited the Mt Claremont Farmers Market on the weekend and thought it was fantastic. I was wondering how to get in touch with someone about selling produce there.
We have a small lime grove down south and are due to pick our crop in a couple of weeks. The farmers market would be a great place for us to set up as our produce would be offered straight from the tree.
Could someone please give me a phone number or email address to get in touch with someone to discuss further.
    Thanks.

  24. Natasha Atkinson March 31st, 2008 1:29 pm

Also, with regard to the CSA query above – I found a couple with the search tool on this site: http://www.organicfooddirectory.com.au/search.php

Looks like something interesting is developing out at Chidlow! – http://www.somervilleecovillage.com.au/enterprise/csa.htm

And this one is already established: http://www.biodynamic-food.com/community_agriculture.html

As already mentioned, the website ‘biodynamic_foods’ describes Mimsbrook farm, but if you go to the Mimsbrook website, it will give you details of their shop in Etwell St. East Vic Park, where you can their own biodynamic produce as well as certified organic produce and dry goods, including fair trade coffee.

  32. Mike May 4th, 2008 9:08 pm

There is a small organic section located at Carine Glades, Mr Fresh! Also thinkn there may be some organic meats available, albeit frozen.

  33. Mel May 7th, 2008 5:09 pm

For those looking to buy organic and free range meat, Mondo’s butchers on Beufort St. Inglewood supplies all kinds. Not everything there is free range or organic but alot of it is.

Have you alligned yourselves with the AFMA charter or choosing to operate differently ? Thanks

  36. Rob June 10th, 2008 1:38 pm

    Hi,

Was just wondering if anyone knew the trading/opening times of the Western Farmer’s Market in Freo – the one on the cnr of High Rd and Montreal St (opp Muzz Buzz). I heard it was open every Sunday – so just wanted to confirm that day and times with anyone who knew, as I live quite close and love the idea of walking there on a Sunday to do some food shopping! I heard great things about the lamb sold there by Mourambine Lamb. Cheers.

  37. Fiona June 10th, 2008 1:41 pm

It opens at 7.30 and closes at 12.30. I have gotten there around 8.30 and the crowds aren’t too bad. I love the lamb, bought one the first week they were opened. You do need to trim it a bit, or at least I do as I am on weight watchers.

    Fiona

  38. Rob June 11th, 2008 8:46 am

Thanks Fiona, plan on walking down there this Sunday – that’s if the weather is permitting ofcourse! – so might be allowed to leave the lamb untrimmed! Thanks again.

    Rob.

  39. Caesia June 15th, 2008 12:07 am

    Hi,

Another north of the river organic shop is Absolutely Organic in Gwelup on North Beach Rd, take first right off Karrinyup Rd as you pass the Mitchell Fwy heading towards the beach.

They have also started doing occasional 2-course organic dinners for $25. I went along to one just the other night and had a lovely evening with some equally lovely food.

    Regards
    Caesia

  41. Andrea June 16th, 2008 6:06 pm

Thanks everyone for leaving info about the markets in Perth, your input is much appreciated.

  42. Andrea June 16th, 2008 6:08 pm

Kelee – if you are talking about the Western Farmers Market in Freo the opening times are 7:30am to 12:30pm.

  43. Kelee June 16th, 2008 7:04 pm

Thanks Andrea, what i was hoping for is a phone number for the market manager as I have some great organic tea I would love to sell there,

  44. Andrea June 17th, 2008 6:27 pm

Oh ok. It looks like the market manager’s name is Rachael Hogg. You can get information about the market at their website Fern and contact them via their contact us page. I can’t see a phone number for them on their site.

Good luck selling your organic tea :)

  45. Miranda June 17th, 2008 6:47 pm

Just to update you all on the Mt Claremont Farmers Market organic situation. There is now an organic pork stall and another organic vegetable stall at the market. There is also fresh seafood, sold directly by the people who caught the fish/squid/octupus etc. A total of over 50 stalls at the market every week, selling products direct from the producers. Nothing quite like chatting to the farmer themself and hearing the passion they have for their products.

Keep your eyes out for more organic products coming soon.

Dairy products coming very soon. Direct from the farm.

Many thanks to all the readers of this website for your support and encouragement. See you at the market every Saturday.

You may be interested to know of two more markets in the planning stages to open later this year or early next year – one in Armadale and one in the Peel region. At last WA has caught the farmers market bug!!

What a great thing for all of us.

Below is the link to our temporary website while we get the new one ready. Click on events to see what is happening at the next market.

  48. Miranda June 20th, 2008 8:34 pm

I will check I have the most up to date information on the contact for the Peel Market and post it here when I get it. It is planned to commence next year I believe. I will post any information soon.

The Armadale market is planned for later this year.

  49. Anne Martin June 21st, 2008 10:41 am

Hi Everyone, just googling about organic produce and happened to come across your great site. I will soon be moving to the Success/Atwell area and wondered if there were any markets around that way. Particularly looking for meat as I hope to grow my own veges etc. I thought there was a place around Gin Gin somewhere that sold organic meat in bulk and delivered to Perth. Great for people to share the cost of a side of beef or whatever. Has anyone heard of this place?

  50. Kelee June 22nd, 2008 11:13 pm

    Hi everyone,
Just a quick heads up on some organic beef in the mandurah area.
The butchers name is Brittania . The beef is from Pemberton and its fantastic. Also the price I think is great! Its also cut to order. I will post the contact details early in the week

  51. Kelee June 22nd, 2008 11:18 pm

    Hi Anne,
The company you are looking for is called BARAMBA they are in gin gin.
The meat is great. If you didnt want to go the bulk way initially they are at most of the farmers markets. They are at the freo farmers market on the 20th july. They have a website it is http://www.baramba.com.au. Drop then an email they are very helpful.

  52. Miranda June 24th, 2008 9:29 pm

As promised – The contact details for the Peel farmers market being proposed is Richard Yates
    Office phone is 97337777 .
This is for potential stallholders etc.
A fair while before the market opens (next year) but all interested can keep an eye out for it.

  53. Anne June 27th, 2008 10:05 am

    Hi Kelee
Thanks for your reply. I think they also sell Baramba meat at the East Vic Park Store (Mimsbrook Farm) at 65C Etchell St. Will try out this weekend

  54. Marjorie June 27th, 2008 10:44 am

    To Kelee
Re Anne’s message, Mimsbrook Farm Store is actually at 65C Etwell St., East Vic Park, and yes, they do have Baramba meat as well as their own produce and other growers certified bio-dynamic or organic produce. Mim’s Kitchen 2 doors down also serves organic breakfasts and light lunches on weekends and very yummy fair trade coffee.

  55. Anita johnson July 5th, 2008 10:12 pm

    Hello;

I am going to visit the Freo farmers market for the first time tomorrow.
I only heard about it recently when I came across an article in the local paper. i live in Fremantle. Can anyone give me any info about home delivered organic fruit/veges?
I read about that in the same article and now cannot find the paper.
I believe that the less doctoring our food has, the less doctoring we are likely to need.

    Love
    ,
    Anita

  56. Anita July 5th, 2008 10:16 pm

Thank you Miranda for the interesting info about the Mount Claremont Farmers market. That will be my destination next weekend.

    Love,

    Anita

  57. Donna July 8th, 2008 1:51 pm

    Hi there,
I represent a group of organic & biodynamic meat producers predominately from the south west of the state. I noticed your post about Britannia Meats, we supply that butcher, and quite a few others in the Perth metro as well. Our website is under construction, but it should be fully operational in the next week or so, and will list all our current outlets. We are also encouraging people to get a group of like minded souls together, order a side or body of beef or whole lambs themselves directly from our farmers, after pre-arranging with a butcher of their choice to process it for them. Please check out our website or email me if anyone wants any further information regarding bucthers, producers, or anything Cheers Donna organicmeats@iinet.net.au

    Hi
I’m from the landsdale farm school and we’re trying to set up a farmers market we’re in the middle of our applications being processed by city of wanneroo. We’re having some difficulty in locating producers that would be interested in being part of our markets. If anyone out there can help us with some contacts that would be great. We don’t have any markets up this way as yet and we’re really eager to get this up and running .Thanks!!!!! Janny

  59. Kelee July 10th, 2008 10:41 pm

  60. lynne July 12th, 2008 11:57 pm

    Hi

I live sor and will be visiting freemantle farmers market tomorrow. Its open every sunday morning and is located on Montreal Street. When i read an artical advising us that some fruit and veg is kept in storage for up to twelve months it concerns me as to what chemicals they must be using to keep it looking fresh. In the uk i always bought my fruit and veg from local farmers and although not all of it was organic i knew it had been freshly harvested. I would rather pay the growers direct for their produce and not the middle men and supermarkets.

  61. Kenson July 13th, 2008 1:38 pm

Do check out the Mt Claremont Farmers Market in Graylands Primary School on Saturdays 8am – 12:30pm… It has been growing at a phenomenal rate and has just about everything you could want…

  62. Tony July 14th, 2008 11:41 am

    Message for Janny,

I’m Edith from Baramba Beef and we do sell our Demeter certified goodies at two markets: Perth City Farm Organic Growers’ every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month and Western Farmers Market in Fremantle every 3rd Sunday.

When it is available we also do sell hogget – better than lamb and almost impossible to get nowadays – and the first Demeter certified sausages in this state. The snaggers are gluten free and can be eaten by those with coeliac or wheat allergy issues. Full ingredient list is available.

Farming can be an unforgiving business and it is truly heart warming to see so much support from the community. Selling directly to somebody we can see and speak to makes it hugely more rewarding and fulfilling than anything else we’ve ever done before.

    Cheers

There is a Kalamunda Market too. Held the 1st Saturday of each month.
There is a website called Markets online, it lists other markets too but some may no longer be running. The Miliatary markets burnt down last year.

I have recently moved to Rockingham from south east Qld. Back home we are really quite spoiled for choice when it comes to growers/organic markets in the Gold Coast and northern rivers (NSW) region. I am very interested in the possibility of a growers market being established in Rockingham and would love to see feedback from any interested parties / supporters of this idea. The area needs it and I believe the community here would support it.

  77. Cecilia September 4th, 2008 8:33 pm

    I’m Cecilia from Unique Organique.

I have a small new (since May) organics traditional nutritional foods business based on Sally Fallon and Weston A Price Foundation principles and am located in Perth. (I import Sally Fallon’s book, Nourishing Traditions from the USA and sell for well under retail value).

My ingredients are 100% either certified organic or bio-dynamic demeter. I make a very popular raw chocolate nut fudge called, Cecilia’s Coconutty Fudge, and Almond Nut Butter which is raw, using fermented/soaked nuts; Chocolate Crackles – yes! nutritious.

I’m also the only one in Perth making real organic sauerkraut. Naturally lacto-fermented, in air-tight safe containment to allow for the proliferation of good bacteria, and is loaded with live enzymes and probiotics and of course natural Vitamin C. I also do a carrot and ginger “kraut” and am coming out soon with my new, Purple Powerkraut, made with purple and white cabbage.

Currently I am only at City Farm Organic Growers Market on the 2nd last and last Saturday of each month (so pretty much the 3rd and 4th Saturday for most months).

My products are currently stocked at:
Organic on Charles in North Perth
    Alive Organics in Bayswater
Earth Market Cafe and Shop in Subiaco
    Manna Wholefoods in Fremantle
    Precious Organics in Myaree
The Mousetrap Cheese Shop at Freo Markets
and again, City Farm Organic Growers Market

Will be applying for a stall at Mt Claremont…so we’ll see!

I was a customer of all these shops and also of Merri Bee and Barambah products long before I started my little business that
I am very passionate about – so thanks to everyone for persevering in everything you do. It’s worth it.

Cheers, and have a nice day ~

Does anybody know of a good guide to seasonal cooking in Australia, reflecting which foods are in season, at what time of year, with possibly recipes and suppliers?

I’m particulary interested in the Perth local area. I have a very nice Maggie Beer recipe book which goes season by season, but it created in the Barossa Valley. I also have one for Tuscany. These only go by the 4 seasons, however, I beleive we could think of our area as having many seasons (as the Indigenous community well knows) The thing with the Perth climate is that the Meditteranean cuisine is married to the Asian and Middle Eastern vibe. So a day-by-day almanac of produce & recipes would be sensational. Add to that the idea of bush tucker, sustainable living, and something really unique and helpful could be created. Either a book or website.

If wnybody shares this interest, please get in touch. I’m starting to compile information in order to create a seasonal cook book for Perth, any ideas / inspiration / foodies / growers / gardeners – please get in touch! Not just Perth either – anywhere in the world!

Hi, all- went to the Armadale producers’ market on Sunday, and was very pleased to see a lot of people attending, even though I didn’t see or hear much advertising. There weren’t a lot of stalls there, and only one fruit & veggie stall, (which had sold out by 9.45am) but I thought it an encouraging start and hope that it continues to grow and improve.
Would like to encourage more to attend and to support the venture.

  89. Shelley November 13th, 2008 2:27 pm

My hubby and I attended the Armadale Farmers Market – we arrived at 9am, and the place was pretty busy – we bought lovely strawberries, bread and flowers. I hope that there will be more stall holders, especially more fruit and Veges. I spoke to one of the boys from the Roleystone orchard later in the week – they had sold out very quickly and were please with the turn out.

The Peel Farmers Market in Pinjarra has started and after Xmas break ie from 3rd january, is weekly Saturdays 8 – 12, at recreation grounds off Pinjarra Road. There are more stalls each week. We have chemical free lamb, see http://www.wiltshirelamb.com and are due to be there next on the 24th January. Our lamb is not frozen, beautiful cuts, trimmed and vacpacked to maximise the freshness.
We also attend the Boyanup Farmers market which is excellent, next on 25th January 2009.

Looking for U-pick farms. I like to do my own picking and canning (preserving) but can’t find solid resources as to what produce is ‘in season’ when (I’m fairly new to this country) and which farms are U-Pick. My postage stamp size backyard will host no more than a few herb pots, so growing my own is not an option. The farm markets I have seen charge full retail for crates of marginal product. I prefer tomatoes, peaches, cucumber pickles, blueberries and strawberries. Any suggestions for U-Pick farms in southern half of WA? Also hope to adopt someone’s no longer used preserving equipment & jars as I had to leave my equipment at home. New is too expensive for me at this time.

Hi. I am a Phd Research Student at Curtin University. Now, I am desperately to get around 800 mangoes from any farmers for my research especially around Gin Gin, Wanneeroo. The mango must be still hard green or just pick up from the farm. I will go to that places myself to get the fruits. Anybody out there can give information or any other farmers who can supply can directly contact me at this mobile no (04-13207611). Thank you very much.

  98. Colleen April 20th, 2009 9:50 pm

The Mt Claremont markets are a fabulous example of what can be achieved. Such markets foster good community spirit, can provide quality fruit & veg, have people who are passionate about their produce and can provide funds for schools willing to house them. I’d like to see them popping up everywhere. I’m interested in becoming involved in establishing a farmers market in the northern suburbs but hardly know where to start. Any suggestions or interest?

  99. Beverley April 21st, 2009 7:54 am

    Hi Colleen,
All I know is two markets are going up in the northern suburbs, one at Gwelup that is going to be fortnightly I believe and the other one in Duncraig and that one will be weekly.

So, if you’re interested let me know.

    Thanks
    B.

Our faboulous market co-ordinator is leaving us and we are searching for a replacement. If you know of anyone who is interested in running our fabulous farmers market every Saturday morning (rain, hail or shine), let contact me.

The Mt Claremont Farmers Market is a genuine farmers market held in the grounds of the Mt Claremont Primary School. We are a community run market with a great network of regular, passionate stallholders and customers every week.

The co-ordinator works for 15 hours a week – the hours are very flexible (except Sat of course) and the position will suit a multitalented person with a passion for bringing growers and consumers together.

More details can be obtained by contacting me at
    mtclaremontfarmersmarket@gmail.com.

  108. BB May 28th, 2009 10:55 pm

    Hi,
When you said genuine farmers market… do you mean that the only people who are allowed to have stalls there are the growers themselves? How is that policed / monitored?

  109. Beverley May 29th, 2009 5:55 am

    Hi BB,
I think you’ll find that all the Farmers’ markets charters (rules and Regulations) around Perth contain (and can be viewed as “policed/monitored) who can sell produce and what kinds of produce is permitted at the markets. These rules are the criteria in which the Market Managers/Co-ordinators use as a benchmark to gauge the stall holder at the time they put in their application to trade.

I also know that stall holders have to list their produce they are selling and cannot vary it (without permission). So I guess that’s how it can be best policed/monitored.

    Cheers!

  110. Andrea May 29th, 2009 6:11 am

  112. Sid and Edith de Burgh June 10th, 2009 4:53 pm

BB and Beverley, your question and comments are extremely valid ones and highlight a problem I have come across several times.

Although most if not all markets have their rules as set down by a charter, not every market is implementing those rules.

All will depend on how strictly the co-ordinator is prepared to uphold and reinforce some or all of those rules.

I have been to a couple of markets where the rules are openly flaunted, i.e. dogs running around, loud discounting towards end of trading time and veg labelled as organic without any proof and blatant retailing (some of these retailers wouldn’t recognise a veg patch if they were standing in it).

My partner and I are Demeter certified stallholders at two markets and because I take a real interest in how markets are run, here and interstate/o’seas, I have observed two common fallacies:

One, many customers seem to assume that because the goodies are grown or value added by the producer or farmer, that this is automatically done without chemicals and therefore is organic. Not always!

Two, many customers automatically assume that everything displayed on a stall comes from that farmer/producer only. Again, not always.

There are two things you can do as a consumer: 1. If you decide you want organic tucker only, then make sure the stallholders are certified with an accredited body (the majority in WA are either Demeter, ACO – formerly BFA, and NASAA, but there may be others). You have a right to see the stallholder’s certificate, and most charters stipulate that if you as a grower declare yourself organic, then you have to display that certifiate on your stall at all times. If you are not sure, ask the stallholder. Many say they are organic and they use minimal or no chemical input. You will have to make the decision on whether to believe them or not. My long experience makes me doubt such statements.

    2. Even if a stallholder is certified, this does not guarantee that you will get their product and only theirs. Unfortunately there are some rogue traders out there, certified and not certified and again, if you make the decision that you don’t want anything that does not come from the direct source, the best thing for you is to ask them outright. I’ve done that a few times and to my surprise found that many will sell a neighbour’s/friends’/colleagues’ stuff or even worse, go to a wholesaler to supplement.

Depending on what the individual market rules are, I don’t see a big problem with this practice AS LONG AS THIS IS OPENLY AND CLEARLY DECLARED AND PATENTLY OBVIOUS TO THE CUSTOMER. What I object to is the culture of non-disclosure.

As most markets loudly declare that they will not allow anything that hasn’t come straight from the producer and proudly state that they are a farmers’ market (not a retail outlet) they should IMHO stick to that philosophy, but I recognise from a growers’ perspective that especially fruit and veg producers are totally at the mercy of the seasons and sometimes their offerings can be of poor quantity and quality through no fault of their own.

If that was the case then any supplementation should be declared and the customer fully supplied with the substitute grower information. That can’t be too hard now, can it? And this practice should only be allowed where there is a genuine situation.

There, I’m getting off my soap box now but BB’s query has struck a raw nerve with me, sorry about that. I’ve seen too many unethical things done which can do no end of damages to the reputation of the whole market and the farmer’s market philosophy in general.

On the positive side I have (with two exceptions) always had a frank and honest answer form all stallholders – at least to the best of my knowledge – when I ask about the origins of a product. That is the beauty of the markets. You can discuss the product and method of growing with real farmers and producers and we both love it when our customers take an interest in our operation.

    So ask, ask, ask……………………..

  113. Beverley June 11th, 2009 6:18 am

    Morning S & E,

Wow, thanks for the comments and observations. Very interesting and a fantastic read, indeed!

In the case of the consumer, your comments resolve the issues of how the customer can deal with certified organic growers.

But I’m wondering, do you have an comments about how charters can be tightened to make sure problems like these issues (ie, supplementing supplies) are dealt with?

    Again, a fantastic read/view you’ve given me.

    Cheers!

  114. amber June 15th, 2009 2:18 pm

really looking forward to the karrinyup farmers market being opened…

    any news on this?!

  115. Edyta June 15th, 2009 3:50 pm

I spoke to the City of Stirling regarding the Karrinyup markets, they said there were no plans for markets in Karrinyup but there was somethig in the pipelines for Duncraig. However it is at a stage where there are still waiting for more info before it gets approved

    Hi,
I’m an organic beef producer and I was just after contact details for Mt Claremont and Western Farmers Market as I was keen to make inquiries at becoming a vendor. Are these available?

    Cheers

  117. Beverley June 30th, 2009 1:43 pm

    Hi Dave,

Not sure where you get those contact details from; however, I know Duncraig will be starting their farmers’ market early/late November. Contact: graphhiker@hotmail.com.

  118. Beverley July 13th, 2009 6:42 am

    Good morning,

In the last 6 months, I have begun to turf out the right side of my front garden. I have tilled it and turned it over. This summer I have every intention of putting my vegetable garden in there as it is the only place on my property that has full sun all day. Anyway, I have decided to make my little garden organic and I seriously have NO green thumbs/fingers. However, I’ve been collecting egg containers and would like to germinate my vegetables from seed because I two small children and would like to show them that carrots come from the ground and not from a plastic bag (if that makes sense)

Anyway, I am north of the river and would like to know if there is any place in which I could get a hold of some organic vege seeds.

    Regards
    Bev.

  119. Sid and Edith de Burgh August 19th, 2009 10:49 pm

Beverley, I didn’t think it would take me two months to reply but life seems to become more hectic by the minute, so my apologies.

You were wondering how market charters could be tightened in order to avoid rogue practices such as buying in produce from a wholesaler/outside source and not declaring it.

I think the problem lies not so much in legislating as in implementing.

To the best of my knowledge (and I could be wrong here) every farmers’ market in WA uses the same charter that the Albany Farmers’ Market uses. They may alter some minor wording here and there but I have seen at least half a dozen of them and I recognise the phrasing and order of paragraphs. Again to the best of my knowledge this original document was drawn up by Jane Adams who is a bit of a farmers’ market guru in NSW; for all I know she may or may not have used an overseas template.

In my view the charters are quite clear and simple – until somebody comes along and starts doing the wrong thing.

Sid and I have been at Perth City Farm Organic Growers’ Market ever since its inception nearly five years ago. Although legally we are under the umbrella of Men of the Trees and do not have any jurisdiction as vendors, we do have many stallholders’ meetings and we are listened to.

We’ve revised and altered the charter a couple of times, each time due to somebody using a loophole or plainly doing as they pleased without regard to the collective. The problem with tightening a law is that for every gap closed, either some more open or the new law makes life difficult in many other unforseen areas, and in my experiece every time something was changed, another ten questions would pop up:’…but what if..?’

For instance I have heard about one of the newer farmers’ markets that they will allow up to 20% of outside produce. Question: 20% of what? Would that be 20% of retail value or 20% of the aggregate weight or 20% of display volume?

If the latter was the case then I could fill a table of 1m length with 80cm of cabbages @ $3-00 each (that would gross me maybe around $50 or so) and use the remaining 20cm for ginger and garlic that I buy in which may bring in as much as much as $400.

If the 20% ruling goes according to weight it gets even better. In an extreme case I could sell 8kg of watermelons of my own and bring in 2kg of saffron or French truffles at $ 20′000 per kg. These examples are of course ridiculous but you’ll get the drift.

At City Farm we pondered that question and haven’t been able to come up with a fair answer. 20% of retail value would possibly be the fairest but there again it will come down to the market convenor checking every stall before trading every time, examining invoices, determining the aggregate retail value of homegrown produce etc. and nobody would have the time or capacity for stress to do that.

Leaving it to the stallholders’ honesty will work extremely well if the stallholder is ethical but if they aren’t then there are more moves than a high frequency oscillator to get out of a tight spot, and I have seen this in action.

So what it comes down to is that the market convenor has to be extremely strict and consistent with enforcing the rulings, and of course this will raise a plethora of more problems.

Especially now that markets are popping up at the rate of pimples on a teenager’s face, a market convenor may have trouble attracting the right stallholders. So if the co-ordinator demands corrective action the stallholder can simply up sticks and go to another market. This puts the convenor in a difficult spot because the stricter thay are the more stallholders they are likely to lose, and eventually there comes a point where a market can suffer from a lack of stallholders and variety, which of course then leads to fewer and fewer customers.

In the case of City Farm this has happened several times where we as a collective and sometimes as individuals demanded stricter adherence to standards, especially with labelling and about re-selling and there have been many heated discussions and arguments.

So now we are exactly at the position where we have lost stallholders who felt they couldn’t or wouldn’t keep to the strict rulings which were there in the first place to guarantee peace of mind for the customer.

There has been a fair amount of criticism levelled at City Farm Organic Growers’ Market for being too expensive or for being too small or for not having the wide product range other markets seem to enjoy but at least if I was a shopper who relied on my ability to trust a product or vendor I would know where I would go. There are a couple of non certified stalls outside the main market building but that is made clear to the customer.

This is not meant as a plug for CF as such but in the light of the topic on hand and the general confusion on who produces what and how organic it is, this is my two bobs worth.

The other place I have a reasonable amount of faith in, is Absolutely Organic in Karrinyup. Often very expensive, and not everything is certified organic but with your fresh fruit and veg, every blade of grass is documented and you know who grew the thing. No other shop in Perth that I have seen (and I’ve been to a few but certainly not all) has that level of transparency.

Some people aren’t too worried about the organic or vendor or produce background and they may love the variety and availability, not to mention the price, and everybody is going to make their individual decision, but as a rule of thumb the cheaper a farmers’ market product is the more questions need to be asked, not the least being about the ethics of undercutting and/or exploiting growers, labour and resources.

Sometimes an organically certified big operator can afford to offer their goodies at a bona fide cheaper price but most stallholders I know are quite small growers and in the seven years I’ve been in business I have yet to see one who got rich going to farmers’ markets!

I hope this is all making sense. I wish there was a clear and simple answer but the complexity of the whole situation makes a veritable minefield for shopper, stallholder and convenor alike.

Good luck, and I promise not to be so tardy next time if you wanted me to comment on anything else.

I am willing to travel if it’s a good market.

    Thanks in advance.

having just found out how australian farmers treat pigs; i am looking for orgaic pork farmers. I also feel that the piggeries should have pressure put on them to be brought inline with the more humane british and american way of pig farming

Manning Farmers Market opened its door a couple of weeks ago. It’s a beautiful space. Open Sat 8am-1pm (I think). It’s held under the trees on the grounds of Clontarf Aboriginal College (opposite Curtin University) Manning Road, Manning

  130. Mei January 9th, 2010 12:06 pm

Just went to the Clontarf market and it’s great! Considering it has only been open for a month, the markets are decently sized and have a good range of produce. Finally, a farmers market in the Manning area!

That’s great to know. I’ll stop by next time I’m in Manning.

Hi I was going to head along to Karrinyup makrets in the undground car park on Sunday, first time I’ve headed along, does anyone know if you can take dogs along?

  133. Colleen February 18th, 2010 5:23 pm

    Hi

Karrinyup?? How long has it been going for and what produce does it sell?

I know Leederville Market (see Oxford St Markets) currently in the grounds of Aronmore College near St Mary’s Church is dog friendly open this Sunday 8 – 12. You may be interested to know that they sell a variety of home made dog biscuits which my dog is v fond of.

    Hello all

It is with some sadness to report that the Fields of Green market in Franklin St Leederville is no longer operating as of Sunday 21-2-10.

There was an ongoing issue with the church car parking which apparently could not be resolved and a proposal to move the market to a different venue met with 30 complaint submissions to the relevant council.
The market will resume if a suitable area can be found but that won’t be in the foreseeable future.

This is a genuine tragedy for all of the growers, customers and the people who made it happen because it was a great little market and will be sadly missed by everyone who discovered this little gem of a market.

    Richard
